Trust, love and belonging

Excelling at innovation by empowering others

If you’re a leader aiming for business innovation, you may think of yourself as a visionary individual that leads the way. Maybe you even worry about being too far ahead of your troops. But what if it wasn’t all about you? This is the question that Frances Frei and Anne Morriss pose in their book ‘Unleashed – The unapologetic leaders’ guide to empowering everyone around you’.

Frei, a professor at Harvard Business School, and Morris, a leadership coach for companies such as Uber, RiotGames and WeWork, offer a different view on leadership. They argue that the most important thing you do as a leader is to build others up – and to make sure that this impact endures even in your absence. The leader’s ultimate job is to create an environment in which other people can excel. In their book they show how the boldest, most effective leaders do this, using a special combination of trust, love and belonging. Their ideas come to life through their use of many examples and sharing the practical tools they use in their own work with companies.

What is your view on leadership? How effective are you at empowering others to innovate?
